One Spirit Book Club Savings

These days one can come across many a claim that the advent of online book retailers have stripped book clubs of an important advantage in the eye of a value-minded book lover: low pricing.

But, is it really so? In the table below, prices at One Spirit Book Club are compared with those at a leading online retailer. Nine books are included, fictional and non-fictional, spanning a range of genres. The books chosen share two common traits: all are hardcover versions and all of them have achieved extraordinary success, with a lengthy tenure on the New York Times bestseller list to prove it.

Note: to simplify the calculation and cut down the shipping costs, we're assuming the four commitment books are combined into one order. This way there are no shipping charges at the online store at all (they offer free shipping on eligible items if the total amount of the order exceeds $25), while One Spirit's charges are reduced to a single $2.49 flat fee.

Conclusion

As you can see, by joining One Spirit Book Club not only can you still save, but you can save big: almost $8 per book compared with the chosen online retailer. For your information, in a regular book store these ten titles would amount to about $240.

Note: to achieve such savings, you need to take a bit of care when shopping. Since your first five books will cost you a total of $2 (plus shipping) no matter which ones you choose, it makes sense to stuff higher priced items into the introductory offer, while for the rest of your commitment you might want to pick some more competitively priced books: for the example above we have chosen four moderately priced books ($11-15).

It is also possible to save even more than our example shows. At the enrollment, One Spirit Book Club gives you the option to choose two more books for 50% discount on publisher's prices and reduce your commitment right away. That's a few dollars not covered in our example. There are special editions to be had, such as these featured in the column to the right. As you can see, you can save over $83 on a single item! There are more great bargains like this to be had, so it pays to poke around a bit.

Clearly, most of the savings in the example above are due to the incredible introductory offer. Once it's been exploited, the playing field levels out to an extent, but that is not to say that One Spirit Book Club membership will not save you money anymore: they always have online discounts, one day sales, bargain books with prices like $5.99 or even lower etc. Special offers such as "buy two books and get one for $1.99" or "make a purchase in January and get a free book in February" will come your way regularly.

Bonus Points are another way of saving money. As a member you earn those on everything you buy, be it books or merchandise items, based on the amount of your total order. You need to spend $10 or more to start earning. For every additional $10 you spend, you get another Point.

ORDER TOTAL POINTS EARNED
$0-9.99 0
$10-19.99 1
$20-29.99 2
$30-39.99 3
... ...

Total order excludes shipping and handling costs.

A minimum of 8 points is required before you can get a bonus-priced book.

CLUB PRICE #OF BONUS POINTS REQUIRED BONUS PRICE
$0-19.99 8 $4.99
$20-39.99 12 $7.99
$40-59.99 16 $9.99

So: when you gather 8 points, you get any book priced at up to $19.99 for just $4.99, and so on. Note that you can save up to $50 on most expensive books (requires 16 points).

Bonus Points are redeemable against books only. To redeem your Bonus Points, visit your Online Account or check off the appropriate box on your Reply Form.

Finally, a way of saving money that some people use is by canceling and rejoining – thus effectively taking advantage of the introductory offer over and over. Although One Spirit would prefer it by far that you stayed a member for a long time and buy many many books, and although they state that they "reserve the right to refuse memberships", if you cancel your membership and then decide to rejoin at a later date, they will usually take you back without a question. In fact, they will likely invite you to rejoin, and possibly even offer you a special online code to enter at the club web site and be privy to an even better deal than the standard 5+4 offer (less commitment books, for example).

While the cancel-rejoin approach will presumably save you a bit more money, it is probably not for everyone. But that's just as well; as was said earlier, if you remain a loyal member, One Spirit Book Club will reward you with plenty of opportunities for additional savings (from free shipping to free books).
