Harlequin eBook Store
Harlequin Enterprises is the world's leading publisher of romance and women's fiction and pretty much the entire range of their output is now available in eBook format. In fact, there are some lines or series that are available in eBook format only -- such as SPICE Briefs or Harlequin Historical Undone -- and there is even a digital-first imprint (Carina Press) offering nothing but eBooks.
So how to get access to all that eBook abundance? Simple: through eHarlequin eBook Store. Sign up for an account and start shopping. The store offers 10% off eBook list price on any book any day, but most of the time you'll be able to save even more by taking advantage of coupons and special deals that Harlequin features regularly -- see our Harlequin Coupons page for details.
Note: Harlequin's eBook Store is a separate shopping experience from their print book store at eHarlequin.com. If you've shopped for print books before and already have a user account there, you will still need to create a separate eBook account to purchase and download eBooks. Available Content
As mentioned, Harlequin's eBook Store offers everything the print book store does and then some. All of Canadian romance giant's series and imprints are there: Harlequin Presents (contemporary romance stories), Harlequin Blaze (sexy, sensuous, highly romantic stories), Harlequin Intrigue (romantic suspense novels), Harlequin Historical (historical romance books), Harlequin Medical Romance (intensely emotional romances and pulse-racing medical drama), Harlequin Desire (passionate, provocative romance novels), Kimani Romance (African-American series romance program), MIRA Books and HQN (suspense and mainstream romance by bestselling authors)... and many more. For a full list, see our Harlequin Review page.
eBooks available for purchase at the Harlequin eBook store are offered in Adobe EPUB format only. EPUB (along with Amazon's Kindle) is the most popular eBook format out there and is quickly becoming the standard. The files downloaded are DRM protected -- DRM stands for Digital Rights Management which provides protection against unauthorized use. In order to view and read the downloaded books you will first need to install software capable of displaying DRM protected EPUB files. The procedure varies depending on which device you use.
Desktop Computers and Laptops (Windows or MAC)
To be able to read Harlequin's eBooks on your desktop computer, laptop or notebook (Windows or MAC) you will need to install Adobe Digital Editions software, a free application used to view and manage digital books in EPUB format (DRM protected or not). Note that the software needs to be activated and you can either do that anonymously or using your Adobe ID. An anonymous activation might be tempting, but this way you will only be able to read the downloaded books on a single computer and you won't be able to transfer the files -- either to another computer or to a portable device. So, creating your own Adobe ID (if you don't already have one) has some advantages and is recommended.
Dedicated eBook Readers
The majority of eReaders available on the market support the EPUB format, DRM protected files included. To be able to read Harlequin's eBooks on your dedicated eReader, you need to authorize the device first, which is done with the Adobe Digital Editions software mentioned above. That done, you can download the eBook file to your computer and then transfer it to your eReader using the same ADE software. This procedure is valid for each eReader device that is directly supported by said software, which includes Barnes&Noble Nook, Cybook's devices, Kobo eReaders and many others -- you can view the complete list of supported devices here. An exception to this rule are the popular Sony Reader devices -- their owners need not bother installing any additional programs as the Sony Reader Library software that comes with Sony devices can handle the required tasks too. Amazon Kindle at the time of this writing does not support the EPUB format and can't be used to read Harlequin eBooks.
Mobile Devices and Tablets
To read Adobe EPUB books on:
- iPad / iPhone
- Android device (tablet or phone)
- BlackBerry device
- Windows Phone 7 device
you need to install a third party application called OverDrive Media Console. The application enables you to browse for titles and download them directly from the eBook Store. Note that before downloading EPUB books you will need to authorize OverDrive Media Console with a free Adobe ID.
