To start your Audible experience, first you need to create an account at the Audible website – a quick and easy process. If you already have an Amazon account you can skip that step and just sign in with your Amazon credentials. The next step is downloading and installing AudibleManager, free software that allows you to download audio programs to your computer and transfer them to your mobile device or burn to CD. And that's it. You're ready to roll.

Note: Macintosh users can download audio files directly into iTunes, so there's no need to install any additional software. Windows users who wish to use iTunes instead of AudibleManager will need to install a small application to get the same functionality.

Users of iPhone / iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Android powered smartphones can get the full Audible functionality simply by downloading and installing the Audible app onto their device. For older mobile phones, AudibleAir is available.

Audible offers two subscription plans: AudibleListener Gold and AudibleListener Platinum. As a member of AudibleListener Gold you get one credit each month, for which you will be charged $7.49 the first 3 months and $14.95 afterwards. One credit is good for pretty much any digital audiobook or program – only a very small number of titles are more than one credit. In practice, this means that for the price of the monthly subscription you get to pick one audiobook of your choice.

AudibleListener Platinum works in much the same way except that its subscribers get two credits per month and are charged $22.95 for it. Annual subscriptions are also available and offer an opportunity for significant savings: you get 12 months for the price of 10. Any additional programs -- books, subscriptions to magazines or radio shows -- need to be purchased separately. However, as a subscriber you get a guaranteed 30% off the regular price, or even up to 50% off with special email-only offers that will come your way frequently.
